Seventh Philippine Company Obtains Lead Safe PaintCertification
A leading paint manufacturer based in Cebu passed the Lead Safe Paint (LSP) certification, making it the seventh company in the Philippines to pass the third-party certification program.
A leading paint manufacturer based in Cebu passed the Lead Safe Paint (LSP) certification, making it the seventh company in the Philippines to pass the third-party certification program.
As announced by SCS Global Services (the US-based certification body), Treasure Island Industrial Corp. (TIIC) passed the exhaustive verification procedures. TIIC manufactures house and automotive paints, among other products.
Manufactured by Treasure Island Industrial Corporation, these products have been verified as compliant with the Chemical Control Order banning lead in paints and similar surface coatings.
"SCS Global Services is excited to announce that Island Paints, Star Elastomer Paints, and Apollo Paints have passed the LSP verification procedures. This helps consumers make confident decisions that these paints conform to the Philippine ban on lead additives in paints. Additionally, SCS takes great pride in helping consumers make decisions that are safe for their family, friends, loved ones, and the planet we call home," said Rob Emelander, Program Manager, SCS Global Services.
The certified TIIC products are now authorized to carry the duly registered LSP logo on paint cans and promotional materials, providing consumers with a visual assurance that the paint they are buying is compliant with the law, and will not pose lead exposure specially to children, workers, and pregnant and lactating women.
To recall, the Chemical Control Order (CCO) issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) banned lead in paint manufacturing and established a mandatory limit not exceeding 90 parts per million (ppm) for lead in paints and similar surface coatings, the strictest lead in paint standard worldwide.
Business and civil society leaders welcomed the latest addition to the country's expanding list of certified lead-safe decorative and industrial paints.

"While the CCO does not require mandatory third-party certification, we are pleased that TIIC went through the process and passed the requirements. This is a notable achievement," said Atty. John Menguito, Managing Trustee of the Cebu-based Philippine Earth Justice Center (PEJC), a member of the EcoWaste Coalition. "Consumers will have more confidence that the certified products adhere to the lead paint standard and are safe from hazards associated with paints containing toxic lead additives."
"This remarkable achievement is a testament to TIIC's unwavering commitment to excellence, safety, and sustainability in the manufacturing of your Island, Apollo, and Star Elastomer paint brand lines," said Reginald Yu, President of the Philippine Paint & Coatings Association, Inc. (PPCAI). "This certification underscores your dedication not only to quality and innovation but also to the well-being of your customers, employees, and the environment. In an era where safety and sustainability are paramount, this recognition from a globally respected entity like SCS Global Services speaks volumes about the integrity and professionalism that define your company."
The International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN), which launched the LSP certification program in 2015, welcomed the good news. "IPEN joins other stakeholders in congratulating TIIC in getting their paints certified as lead-safe. Lead paint remains a major source of childhood and occupational lead exposure especially in developing countries and this commendable action by TIIC will help mitigate lead poisoning among vulnerable sectors of society such as children and paint factory workers, and provide Filipino consumers with safer choices when buying paints," said Jeiel Guarino, Global Lead Paint Elimination Campaigner, IPEN.
A retail store in Tagbilaran City offers lead-free Island Paints that pose no lead exposure risks.
The EcoWaste Coalition, an advocate for a zero waste and toxics-free society, likewise congratulated TIIC for its achievement. "We congratulate TIIC for investing in third-party certification, and for joining the growing league of Filipino paint makers that have earned LSP certification. Removing lead ingredients in paint formulations and subjecting products to an independent assessment are wise business decisions that can have far-reaching benefits, including health protection, increased consumer confidence, positive public image, competitive advantage, and higher sales, " said Manny Calonzo, Campaigner, EcoWaste Coalition. "We encourage other paint makers to follow suit and get certified."
Aside from Treasure Island Industrial Corp., the following companies have successfully passed the LSP certification: Asian Coatings Philippines Corp./Rain or Shine Paints; Davies Paints Philippines, Inc. ; FH Colors & Coatings Corp./A-Plus Paints; Pacific Paint (Boysen) Philippines, Inc.; Roosevelt Chemical Inc. /Triton Paints; and Sycwin Coating & Wires. Inc./Purecoat Paints.
